What is BOTOX and How Does it Work?

BOTOX is a brand name for a product based on botulinum toxin type A, a product made from the bacterial toxin botulin. It is widely used to treat certain medical conditions, but cosmetically, neuromodulators are used to temporarily remove wrinkles by blocking signals from the nerves to specific facial muscles.

What Can You Expect with BOTOX Injections?

BOTOX injections are administered on an outpatient basis. The procedure requires no anesthesia and only takes a few minutes to perform. Using very fine needles, BOTOX is injected into specific muscles with minimal discomfort.

Who Is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?

Most patients of adult age who show signs of aging are candidates for BOTOX in Portland with Dr. Michael Kim.

However, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and people with certain neuromuscular medical conditions should not have this treatment.

If you have had facial surgery, have difficulty swallowing, or have weakness in your forehead muscles, you may not be a candidate for this procedure. After a consultation and evaluation of your facial structure, Dr. Kim can tell you if BOTOX injections are recommended.

Dr. Kim is my go to person for Botox since I moved. He is charming, talented and extremely good at what he does. He will let you take your time to tell him what exactly you have in mind and he will give his honest and professional opinion generously. The results are always satisfying.

How Many Units Will I Need?

After the initial consultation, Dr. Kim will formulate a plan that will take into account each patient’s anatomy and treatment goals. This plan is customized for each individual patient and therefore the amount of units administered can vary greatly. On average, most patients receive 30-50 units of Botox.

How Safe Is BOTOX?

As stated by the manufacturer, BOTOX is backed by more than 15 years of clinical studies and approved for use in 96 countries. The safety and efficacy of these products have been described in nearly 500 articles in medical and scientific journals. BOTOX is one of the safest and most effective aesthetic procedures offered, and therefore continue to enjoy great popularity and patient satisfaction.

How Long Do the Results Last?

The full effects of BOTOX injections can last for three to four months, and therefore most patients return to our clinic three to four times a year. As the muscles gradually regain the ability to contract, lines and wrinkles begin to reappear. Over time, wrinkles may be diminished, as the muscles are being trained to relax and atrophy of the target muscle takes place.
