What is Alarplasty?
Alarplasty, otherwise known as nostril reduction surgery, is a procedure that is designed to improve the aesthetics of the patient’s nostrils, making them more proportionate to the rest of the patient’s nose and face. During the private consultation, Dr. Kim will carry out a full facial analysis to determine the ideal measurements for both the nose and the nostrils. Each patient’s particular anatomy will be carefully examined to determine what changes are required.

- Improved facial symmetry: Nostril reduction is an effective means of balancing the proportions of the nose and face, leading to improved overall symmetry.
- Enhanced appearance: Alarplasty can achieve an overall improved appearance of both the nose and face.
- A boost in self-confidence: The aesthetic improvements that come with Alarplasty leave patients feeling better about the way they look, making it easier for them to assert themselves in the world.
The effectiveness of an Alarplasty procedure may vary depending on the patient and the extent of their issues. It is vital that patients consult with a qualified healthcare professional to figure out whether nostril reduction is right for them based on their medical history and cosmetic goals.
Who is an ideal candidate for Alarplasty?
Ideal candidates for Alarplasty procedures are in good general health and are unhappy with the size or shape of their nostrils. That said, there are certain factors that could make one unfit for the procedure.
Some of these include:
- Active skin infections or conditions: Patients with conditions such as cold sores, acne, eczema, or rosacea may not be ideal candidates for an Alarplasty procedure.
- Certain medications: Certain medications, including blood thinners or aspirin, can increase the risk of complications during the procedure.
- Pre-existing medical conditions: Having certain medical conditions, such as bleeding disorders and autoimmune diseases, may make the procedure dangerous.
As always, it is of the utmost importance that patients refer to a qualified healthcare professional to determine if Alarplasty is the right treatment option for them.
What does an Alarplasty procedure entail?
As a standalone procedure, Alarplasty typically takes less than an hour and is a procedure done under local anesthesia or oral sedation. It is also often incorporated into a formal rhinoplasty operation.
During the procedure, the surgeon will make small incisions at the base of the nostrils and remove a small amount of tissue from the alar base, which is the area where the nostrils meet the cheeks. He will then be able to adjust the size and width of the nostrils and then carefully close the incisions to minimize the chances of developing conspicuous scars.
What is the recovery process like?
Following the procedure, patients go home the same day to recover. It is normal to experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort around the nose and nostrils for the first few days. Pain medications and cold compresses can help mitigate these effects throughout the recovery period.
Patients must follow the surgeon's postoperative instructions carefully in order to ensure that they heal properly and experience the best results possible.
It is typically recommended that patients:
- Avoid strenuous activity (such as exercise)
- Avoid activities that will increase blood flow to the face
- Avoid excess sun exposure
- Keep the incision sites clean and dry throughout the recovery period
Most patients can get back to work and their normal routines within a week or two of the procedure. Of course, the exact length of the recovery period will be different for everyone depending on factors such as the extent of the procedure and the individual's healing process.
